Murray Fraser Appointed Director of AI Strategy and Transformation

As artificial intelligence continues to dominate conversations across the legal sector, many law firms find themselves asking the same questions: Where do we start? Are we using it safely?

From concerns around security and governance to uncertainty about which tools to adopt and how to achieve meaningful return on investment, AI presents both significant opportunities and complex challenges for law firms of all sizes.

To help our clients navigate this rapidly evolving landscape, we are delighted to announce that, from 1 June, Murray Fraser will take on the new role of Director of AI Strategy and Transformation at Xperate.

This appointment reflects both the growing importance of AI within the legal sector and Xperate's commitment to helping firms embrace innovation in a practical, responsible and commercially effective way.

Bridging the AI Gap

While the largest law firms are investing heavily in specialist legal AI platforms such as Harvey and Legora, many ambitious mid-sized and regional firms are still working out what their AI journey should look like.

The reality is that many firms already have access to powerful technology and valuable data within their existing systems. The challenge is often understanding how to unlock that potential safely and strategically.

Murray's focus will be on helping firms move beyond basic AI experimentation and generic use cases. Instead, he will work with firms to identify real operational challenges, explore opportunities for transformation, and create practical solutions that deliver measurable value.

Whether that's making better use of existing technology, introducing AI-enabled workflows, or developing bespoke solutions to solve specific business problems, the goal remains the same: helping firms work smarter, improve client experiences and create sustainable competitive advantage.

A Unique Perspective

Few people are better placed to lead this conversation than Murray.

As a former solicitor, business owner and Chief Information Officer of a large law firm, he has experienced first-hand the technology challenges facing legal businesses from every angle.

He understands the pressures of fee earning, the realities of managing operational change, the complexities of legal technology and the importance of balancing innovation with risk management.

Murray says:

"AI is simply the latest technology challenge - and opportunity - for law firms. The firms that will succeed are not necessarily those spending the most money on AI tools. They are the firms that clearly understand their objectives, identify the right use cases and implement solutions that genuinely support their people, clients and business goals."

Commenting on Murray’s new challenge, Xperate’s COO and Co-Founder, Mark Garnish, said:

"Murray's appointment in this role reflects both the growing importance of AI within the legal sector and Xperate's commitment to helping law firms navigate that journey with confidence. What makes Murray uniquely qualified is his previous experience as a leader within a large law firm and his ability to understand the operational, commercial and technology challenges firms face. While AI presents enormous opportunities - success isn't about buying the latest tools - it's about identifying the right roadmap and implementing transformation strategically. We are really pleased to have Murray in place to drive this area of the business forward.”

AI with Guardrails

Xperate firmly believe that successful AI adoption requires more than just access to technology.

It requires clear governance, appropriate security controls, defined use cases and a thorough understanding of risk.

That's why our approach focuses on helping firms build confidence in AI through practical implementation, sensible guardrails and robust security frameworks.

AI should enhance human expertise - not replace it.

When deployed correctly, it can reduce administrative burden, improve communication, streamline processes and free up valuable time for higher-value work.

Practising What We Preach

AI is already playing an increasingly important role within Xperate itself.

Our development teams are leveraging AI-assisted tools to accelerate delivery, improve efficiency and reduce development costs for clients, allowing us to create innovative solutions more quickly than ever before.

We're also working on several exciting projects that demonstrate the practical value of AI within legal operations. These include solutions that intelligently extract information from practice management systems and automatically generate client-friendly updates, helping firms improve communication and transparency without increasing administrative workload.

Looking Ahead

Murray's appointment marks an important step in the evolution of Xperate's service offering.

As law firms continue to explore how AI can support their growth, improve client service and drive operational efficiency, our role is to help them navigate that journey with confidence.

AI is not a destination. It is a capability.

And with Murray leading our AI strategy and transformation initiatives, we are excited to help more firms turn possibility into practical reality.
